juin 14th, 2010The definition of mental disorder as harmful dysfunction is closely linked to issues that are central to the contemporary debate in the philosophy of psychiatry. Suggested by the philosopher Jerome Wakefield, it can be characterized through its two main features. First, it has been elaborated in the spirit of a discussion of the DSM’s approach of psychiatric taxonomy: Wakefield’s position is defined in its close relation to psychiatric practice and its classificatory and therapeutic goals. Second, the main idea involved in the definition is that we should combine, rather than oppose, two ways of understanding mental disorders. One is biological and objective, as implied by the use of the biological concept of function-function being understood in an evolutionary perspective. The second is social and perspectival, with the idea of harmful consequences that are necessary to the ascription of mental disorder, and evaluated in a given context. Wakefield denies that mental illness is a myth. But he also denies that naturalism, without further qualification, is the alternative to a radical constructivist view.
